Torture methods abounded in earlier times. Some things were adopted in a weakened form for the SM area. Instruments of torture produced or prolonged human suffering. Eronite illustrated and explained.

Here are the torture methods or instruments of torture in alphabetical order:

Interview chair
Purpose: torture or punishment
Torture methods: When interrogating the suspect, he was placed on a chair whose wood was spiked with iron spikes. Thus, a confession was often made more quickly than in usual “interrogations.”

Thumbscrew - Torture Metaphor Explained by EroniteThumbscrew

Purpose: torture or punishment
Torture methods: Before witches were tried, people often tried to force a confession using the thumbscrew. This instrument of torture looked like a vice in which individual fingers were clamped. As the stick was twisted shut, the pressure on the fingers increased until the bones splintered.

Include

Purpose: torture or punishment
Torture methods: The condemned was locked in a cell or room so small that it was impossible to lie down. In addition, there was usually the denial of food, so that the victim soon confessed.

Drown
Purpose: torture or execution (execution)
Torture methods: The hands of the delinquent are tied together and locked on a rope or in a grid (cage) repeatedly dipped into the water until he gasped for air again and again. Resurfaced, he could make a confession on the surface – or was let into the water again until the wet filled his throat more and more…. If there was no suitable watercourse (river, sea, lake, harbor basin, etc.) available, people also liked to use a water-filled wine barrel into which they put the victim.

Torch (pitch or sulfur torch).

Purpose: torture or punishment
Methods of torture: fire was used to burn sensitive areas of the human body (soft tissues, mucous membranes, armpits, soles of feet, etc.) until the skin detached from the body or “only” blistered.

Spanish boot - foot press | EronitePicking toenails and fingernails

Purpose: torture or punishment
Torture methods: Wood and metal splinters were repeatedly hammered under the nails until a confession was forced.

Foot squeeze, foot screw
Purpose: torture or punishment
Methods of torture: A threaded ferrule was placed around the instep of the foot, which – depending on how fast it was twisted shut – caused the bones to break and splinter.

Flagellation Belt (Saint Elms Belt)

Purpose: torture or execution (execution)
Torture methods: The scourging belt, on the inside of which there were 15 to 20 iron spikes, was placed around the waist and hips of the condemned and lashed tight. With every slightest movement, the thorns penetrated the flesh and could even lead to death from gangrene, infection or blood poisoning. Often carnivorous beetles and maggots were placed in the gaping wounds, causing the insects to bore through the abdominal cavity and virtually eat the victim from the inside.

Weights

Purpose: torture or execution (execution)
Torture methods: The offender was strapped to a table and a wooden board or metal plate was fixed on his stomach. Weights so heavy that the victim could hardly breathe were placed on them. If no confession was made, the weight was increased until the chest burst.

Crickets

Purpose: torture or execution (execution)
Torture methods: The delinquent, lying down, was fastened to a construction that allowed a small fire to be lit under his feet. Before that, the feet and calves of the victim were rubbed with oil or grease. This allowed the skin to burn until flesh and even bone were exposed. For special punishments, the victim was tied to the torture instrument lying at an angle so that he could smell his own flesh during the burning process.

Garotte - torture instrument explained by EroniteNeck iron, garrote, choke iron

Purpose: torture or execution (execution)
Torture methods: The victim of torture was tied to a post, while behind the back the executor tightened the “choking screw” placed around the neck tighter and tighter until the offender suffocated or threatened to suffocate, as here the windpipe was cut off from the air supply with enormous pressure.

Pulley Strappado | EronitePulling up on a pulley

Purpose: torture or punishment
Torture methods: The criminal’s hands were tied behind his back and pulled upward by a pulley until arms were dislocated or shoulders dislocated. This method was particularly popular when the executioner did not want to leave any lasting marks on the victim, since arms and shoulders could be relatively easily put back into place. Nevertheless, the delinquent had to suffer hellish tortures. An aggravation of the punishment was the fastening of weights to the feet.

Judas Cradle | EroniteJudas Cradle

Purpose: torture or punishment
Torture methods: The delinquent had to sit with his naked anus on a pyramid made of wood. His own body weight drove the wooden tip into his anus, spreading and tearing it apart. Depending on the severity of the punishment, the victim was weighted down with weights to speed up the process of “busting ass” and maximize the effect of the pain.

Chain scourge

Purpose: torture or punishment
Torture methods: The straps of a leather whip were removed and replaced with metal chains, the ends of which were sometimes sharpened. While the delinquent was now being whipped, he suffered unspeakable pain from the scratching of the skin and flesh.

Cooking

Purpose: torture or punishment (rarely execution)
Torture methods: The scourged person was boiled alive in a kettle, sometimes until the flesh separated from the bones.

Rat
Purpose: torture, punishment, execution
Torture methods: A rat was draped on the victim’s stomach and an iron cage was placed over the animal. Torches or fire sticks were used to panic the rat, which then tried to free itself and ate through the abdominal cavity of the condemned.

Skull clamp, head screw
Purpose: torture or execution (execution)
Torture methods: The head screw was a metal headband with iron pins on the inside. By pulling them tight, they slowly drilled into the victim’s head.

Skull press, squeezer, head clamp

Purpose: torture or execution (execution)
Torture methods: In the instrument of torture, the head has been pressed into a vise, which has been screwed down until immense pressure has been exerted on the head of the lawbreaker. Orange juice squeezers follow a similar principle. If the torture victim did not want to confess, the squeeze was screwed down further until the skull finally cracked.

Spanish spider
Purpose: Torture or Punishment
Torture Methods: A Spanish spider is a metal mesh similar in shape to a hair clip. This was implanted under the skin or flesh (in the Middle Ages, however, it was rather a brutal pushing in) and the person to be tortured was pulled upwards with a pulley on this spider, so that skin or flesh were torn out in shreds.

Spanish goat

Purpose: torture or punishment, execution
Torture methods: Similar to the Judas Cradle, a wooden goat was used here. This trestle usually consisted of a three-cornered wood, on which a condemned woman had to sit naked, while her legs were weighted with weights. The genital area of the “witch” was so painfully tormented.

Spanish clit

Purpose: Torture or punishment
Torture methods: In the extremely painful method, the villain was hung upside down and skin and flesh were scraped from his body with an iron claw.

Roller bench | EroniteRack

Purpose: torture or punishment
Torture methods: An extremely popular method for tearing tendons and muscles or dislocating arms and legs. For this purpose, the delinquent was tied to a bench or ladder and pulled lengthwise by his hands and feet with a rope.

Sex and genital torture (only unofficially applied in many kerks)
Purpose: punishment
Torture methods: In the sinister torture cellars, the victims were sexually tortured with all kinds of instruments. This began with the insertion of (hot) objects or rodents into body orifices and extended to rape and the removal of genitals.

Goat Torture

Purpose: Torture or Punishment
Torture Methods: One of the meanest ways to torture a human is to lick a goat. For this purpose, the soles of the feet were smeared with salt and the goat licked the feet of the delinquent with its very rough tongue, which at first caused an unspeakable tickling, but then a tremendous burning of the resulting wounds. The smearing with salt (which increased the burning immensely) was repeated until the skin came off the foot, revealing the raw flesh.
