Freedom of expression vs. privacy of children and young people

Two controversial bills are being prepared in Utah regarding age verification on social media. Proposition number SB 152 would require social media companies to verify the age of every user in Utah who wishes to open or use an account on a platform. The rule would take effect Jan. 1, 2024.

If a user is under 18, companies would have to give parents access to their children’s accounts. The HB 311 initiative goes further and prohibits anyone under the age of 16 from having accounts on social media. SB 152 would allow parents or guardians to monitor posts, messages, and responses on social media.

Platforms would have to prevent minors from accessing accounts between 10:30 pm and 6:30 am. Experts are concerned about recent attempts by some Utah politicians to censor the Internet. The bill’s demands have been called “stupid” and “ridiculous” by experts. There are concerns that the regulations could be an intrusion on freedom of expression and cause children to lie about their age.

Utah’s age verification proposals on social media have sparked much controversy and concern. It was argued that it is important to protect children from the dangers of the Internet, but their rights must also be considered.

It is also argued that it is important for children and young people to develop their own online identity and express themselves freely without being constantly monitored. This can help them shape their opinions and beliefs and develop their communication skills.

There are also concerns that age verification will be difficult to implement for children and teens on social media platforms. Some fear that this will lead to an increase in age falsification, which will result in children and teens remaining unprotected.

Overall, recent debates in Utah demonstrate the importance of finding a balanced solution that considers both the protection of children and youth and their rights. A balance must be found that allows children and young people to communicate safely and freely on the Internet while their rights and freedoms remain protected.
